The Dundee Academy of Sport was a partnership between Abertay University and Dundee & Angus College. Funded via a grant from the Scottish Funding Council and through internal resource the academy was an example of educational institutions working together to enhance the student journey from school to college and through to university level study. Central to the ethos of the academy was the understanding that sport could enhance the educational journey of many schools pupils and students by providing relevant contexts for learning alongside exciting & applied educational experiences that bring learning to life. Our work focused on supporting colleagues within the education and sport sectors across Tayside and Fife to raise levels of attainment, achievement and progression in schools, partner colleges and Abertay University.
Our goals were:
1. To use sport as a vehicle for engaging young people in education at school
2. To further develop the region's workforce in the sport and leisure industry
3. To establish, working with Dundee & Angus College, the Dundee Academy of Sport as the region’s best provider of sports education.
We brought learning experiences to life by using sport and physical activity as a context for learning. Imagine learning French through the Tour De France, physics through looking at a rugby scrum, mathematics through negotiating a footballers contract - the academy of sport did just that and more!
With an emphasis on changing perceptions the academy aimed to add relevance to learning whilst inspiring school pupils to consider progress onto Higher/Further Education. This coupled with a summer camp programme that championed physical activity resulted in the academy making a significant contribution to the education of thousands of school pupils across Tayside & Fife.
Within HE/FE we worked with college students studying sport to progress onto studying at Abertay University whilst providing additional support to students whilst they were at Abertay. Support was also provided to students (and members of the community) to attend various vocational learning events ranging from conference attendance through to sports coaching qualifications. 207 students articulated from partner colleges to Abertay as a result of support from the academy of sport.
Sadly our work has come to an end however we are delighted with what we have achieved. Over 5 years of we delivered 1956 events, with a total attendance of 56,875!
